To serve as motivation during the long rehabilitation period following a career-threatening injury,
Istvan created the 50 by 12 Challenge -- between Sept
01, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012, slowly jog and walk the half-or full-marathon distance once each week for fifty consecutive
weeks (50 times in 12 months). And to ensure a safe recovery, the jogging portion
of each event must be at a pace slower than 12:00 minutes per mile and at least 10 miles of each full-marathon must be completed
by walking. Each "unofficial" event must be documented with a GPS watch print-out.
In mid-November, recognizing the health risks of running the full-marathon
distance in wintery conditions (sub-freezing temperatures, hidden ice, deep snow, strong winds), Istvan decided to focus mostly
on the half-marathon distance and therefore created the 100 by 12 Challenge -- between
Sept 01, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012, slowly jog and walk the half-marathon distance twice each week for fifty consecutive weeks
(100 times in 12 months). Like before, the jogging portion of each event must be at a pace slower than
12:00 minutes per mile and at least 10 miles of each full-marathon must be completed by walking. Each
"unofficial" event must be documented with a GPS watch print-out. Also, a full-marathon
will be counted as two half-marathons.
This table shows Istvan's progress ... by month, distance, and day.
