The marathon is a running event to commemorate the trek of a Greek messenger (Phidippides) from the
plain of Marathon to Athens to report a great military victory in 490 BC. It was first introduced at the 1896 (Athens) Olympics and covered a distance of only 25 miles. That distance was increased
to 26.2 miles
(42.195 kilometers) at the 1908 (London) Olympics to accommodate the Queen's request to watch the start of the
race from her palace. Samuel Wanjiru (KEN) won a gold medal in the men's marathon at the 2008 (Beijing) Summer Olympics in a new olympic
record time of 2:06:32. Dathan Ritzenhein (USA) finished in 9th place
and Ryan Hall (USA) finished in 10th place.
