The marathon is a running event to commemorate the trek of a Greek
messenger (Phidippides) from the plain of Marathon to Athens to report a great military victory in 490 BC. It was first
introduced at the 1896 (Athens) Olympics and covered a distance of only 25 miles. That distance was increased to 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) at the 1908 (London) Olympics to accommodate the Queen's request to watch the start of the
race from her palace. Horst Preisler, a 72 year old German pensioner, is believed to be the world's
leading marathoner ... having completed more than 1600 marathons by January 2009. About two tenths of one percent of
the population has completed a single marathon.
